Mārtiņi is the festival that marks the end of outdoor chores for the agricultural year, and the beginning of winter.

With the incursion of Christianity, this festival became associated with Saint Martin of Tours, and is celebrated on his feast day: November 11th. However, it seems that this particular saint was probably picked because his feast day fell on or near the date of this particular festival.
